Who’s afraid of zombies, sharks and the big, bad wolf?

Master_Nick-CarnalVeilStep8As I begun to paint fur on the wolf masks, it struck me again that we destroy what we fear.

Though the big bad wolf may menace Little Red Riding Hood, humans have killed far more wolves than the other way ’round. Likewise far more sailors slay sharks than sharks sup ‘pon swimmers.

Our fear of being eaten alive has melded with fear of our fellow man.
Zombies, Master_Nick-gonzombie3Dour undead avatars now stalk the screens en masse, almost entirely supplanting all other carnivorous creatures.

If ever we did face a true zombie outbreak, we’d mostly likely drive the walking dead to the brink of extinction and beyond in very short order. That may sound almost like a cheery thought, until you remember that such shamblers are make believe, an allegory. Our eagerness for a zombie apocalypse mirrors our fear of each other. And perhaps we earn that mistrust, for no one poses a greater threat to us than we ourselves. We poison the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.
Master_Nick-Mary-lil_lambWe are the wolf, not living in the wild, feeding on not but the occasional sickly sheep, but the Big Bad Wolf, the bedtime story monster that dons a human’s guise, posing as someone harmless while we consume every living thing we can.
We are the zombies.

We needn’t close on a down note. While I paint and write disturbing scenes, ’tis my hope that through the arts we may took a good long look at ourselves, and resolve to do better.

Here’s hoping for harmony!
