The Crypt of Dr. Caligari

Angel of Death: Part V

Master_Nick-Angel0f_Death6Yesterday I spoke of drawing inspiration from life. You know what’s neat? The arts are part of that life, as natural to us as sprucing up a nest is to a bird. No matter how art may offend or befuddle the willfully uncultured, life inspires art, and art inspires life.

There are, at times, cross pollenations. Thus films can inspire elements of of painting.

Often in this series wherein succubi battle zombies, the subtly off-kilter angle of each tombstone is a nod to the warped sets in the classic silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.

Also, I just can’t help but slip some Hellraiser/Hellraiser II influences into my zombie designs. There’s definitely something of skinless Frank and Julia in these ravenous ghouls.

One final note for the night– Many see the succubus Thani facing the undead and think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Strangely enough, that’s one of the few works that hasn’t influenced my painting. I hadn’t seen Buffy until after I’d begun this series. (I’ve since caught up with the buffy-verse, and I do enjoy the sense of humor featured therein.)

Speaking of succubi, I must sign off and prepare for my act with Angel Kitty in the Goddesses and Monsters Burlesque show,
